SUN PEAKS, B.C. – It’s the sixth year for the Sun Peaks Film Festival, which brings together local artists and a curated list of movies from the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.

The film festival will feature special guests throughout its run, including Thursday night (Jan. 15) with Sun Peaks Fire Rescue, Sun Peaks Search and Rescue and Kamloops Search and Rescue. The event runs from Thursday to Saturday.

“For some reason, they’re just a little more exciting this year. The films that we got from the Vancouver International (Mountain) Film Festival are super exciting as well. There are some really exciting, really cool stories in those films,” said festival president Marj Knive.

One of those films, Sixty Plus and Still Smoking, is about two over-sixty hikers taking on a trek in Ecuador.

“It’s about the challenges we had and kind of, figuring out how to get there, getting used to the altitude… because we were really worried,” said director Harold Richins.

Liam Hall, an avid snowboarder, has been making films for over a decade and saw the film festival as a way to put his skills to the test.

“I found this old film from, like, a decade ago that I’d made. I used to make snowboarding films under the name ‘Put it in the Bowl’, and this one just sort of sat there and never saw the light of day,” said Hall.

A local musician got the film bug and decided to combine her two passions to make a film about those who inspire her.

“I loved the part about telling the story behind the song and sharing the experiences of some exceptional people so that have that are in their 80s and 90s and even one at 104,” said Colleen Hannigan, director of Behind the Glass.

On Saturday, there will be a chance for these local filmmakers to display their work in Sun Peaks.
