Canadian rugby sevens women return to action in Singapore and Perth, Australia

After opening the HSBC SVNS season with back-to-back sixth-place finishes in Dubai and Cape Town, the Canadian women’s rugby sevens team returns to action at events in Singapore and Perth, Australia.

Canada, which stands seventh in the standings, opens play in Singapore on Jan. 30 against No. 5 France before facing No. 2 New Zealand and No. 8 Britain on Jan. 31. The Perth stop starts Feb. 7.

Canada coach Jocelyn Barrieau’s 14-player travelling squad has been reinforced by six members of Canada’s runner-up team at the 2025 Rugby World Cup: Olivia Apps, Fancy Bermudez, Alysha Corrigan, Gabrielle Senft, Shoshanah Seumanutafa and Taylor Perry.

Apps, Bermudez, Corrigan, Senft and Sabrina Poulin join the squad from their club teams in England’s PWR (Professional Women’s Rugby) circuit.

“We are really excited to welcome some familiar players back to the team,” Barrieau said in a statement. “Young players are still being selected and pushing for spots on the roster but having some veterans back playing for a team and with teammates they care so much about has everyone very excited heading into Singapore and Perth.”

Breanne Nicholas, Savannah Bauder, Krissy Scurfield, Eden Kilgour, Carissa Norsten and Kennedi Stevenson are holdovers from the first two stops of the season.

Canada’s final 13-player roster for Singapore will be confirmed prior to the tournament’s opening match.

Asia Hogan-Rochester and Pamphinette Buisa, both part of Canada’s team for the first two stops of the season, are unavailable after signing with the PWR’s Sale Sharks and Bristol Bears, respectively.

“The focus going into these next two tournaments is to build on each performance and improve our game management,” Barrieau said. “There were a few key moments at important times where we lacked a bit of composure in Dubai and Cape Town so we know if we can improve in those moments we will come up with better results.”

Singapore and Perth are the final two stops before the HSBC SVNS Series returns to Vancouver on March 7-8.

New Zealand and Australia contested the first two finals of the season with New Zealand winning 29-14 in Dubai and Australia prevailing 26-12 in Cape Town.
