PETERS: If Trump’s morality is his only constraint, that’s no constraint at all

PEOPLE FREQUENTLY ASK US why we spend so much time and energy on U.S. politics — and specifically on President Donald Trump.

Trump Derangement Syndrome, they call it. He’s living rent-free in our heads.

This week gave us a good reminder why the entire world should be concerned with what’s going on in Washington and Mar-a-Lago.

Trump gave a wide-ranging interview with the New York Times and was asked at one point if there were any limits on his own powers in a global context.

His response was, quote, ‘Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

Trump continued by saying he doesn’t need international law because he doesn’t want to hurt anyone.

Now, Trump’s own sense of morality — or lack thereof — has been well-established.

Even before he was connected with Jeffrey Epstein’s island of pedophilia, there were innumerable examples of Trump ignoring societal norms when it comes to personal morality.

Entrusted with the world’s wealthiest nation and its most powerful fighting force, that moral compass has failed to magically right itself.

If Trump truly does want to ignore international law, if he truly believes he can build and crumble nations with the wave of his hand, then we should take his word and his administration’s word on every bat guano crazy suggestion they make about what they want to do.

When they say they want to take Greenland, an autonomous territory of a NATO ally, we should believe them.

And yes, when Trump says he wants to make Canada the 51st state, we should believe that he will act to do it.

That’s the most frightening part for us — and why we need to be concerned and act as if Trump acting on this rhetoric is not only a possibility but an eventuality.

His own morality is the only constraint on his powers — so he believes.

That’s no constraint at all.
