‘There is a threat to the public’; Kamloops RCMP issue warning following suspected homicide

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are clarifying their warning to the public that was issued following the suspected murder of Muhammad ‘Ash’ Zafar, and they say there is a threat to the public.

While Mounties originally said Tuesday (Jan 6) that Zafar’s homicide was an isolated incident that had no threat to the public, they changed their advice the following day and urged people who use online dating apps and websites and in particular men-seeking-men sites to be careful.

“We have made recommendations and precautions to meeting online and those are share the plans with a trusted friend or family member, arrange a check in before and after the meeting and meet in public when possible,” Kamloops RCMP Supt. Jeff Pelley said Thursday (Jan. 8).

“Our investigation has evolved and hence that was our subsequent direction to the public while this investigation continues to be a priority with our serious crimes unit.”

Asked by CFJC Today if there is any current threat to the community, Pelley was blunt in his response though he could not say if a suspect had been identified.

“Yes, there is a threat to the public with respect to an individual who is under investigation for an act of homicide,” confirmed Pelley. 

Mounties have offered up a series of tips for people who use online platforms to meet new people, as follows:

• Share your plans with a trusted friend or family member
• Arrange check ins before and after the meeting
• Meet in public places when possible
• Trust your instincts and leave if something feels unsafe

“We are still asking anyone who had contact with Mr. Zafar between Saturday evening and late Sunday to reach out to investigators,” Kamloops RCMP S/Sgt. Kevin McIntyre said Wednesday. “This includes individuals who use men-seeking-men dating sites or apps and may have communicated with him, or with someone using his images or profile information.”
