SALMON ARM, B.C. — Residents in the Shuswap are being warned of a seasonal scam trend that’s currently underway.

Salmon Arm RCMP says suspects in the trend approach potential victims in higher traffic areas such as gas stations, grocery stores or shopping plazas.

In a news release issued Tuesday (Jan. 6), police say the suspects claim to have lost their wallets, that they need money for hospital bills or are escaping domestic violence.

The Salmon Arm detachment says the suspect offers to sell the potential victim gold jewelry or give it to them as collateral in exchange for gift cards or money, with the jewelry later being determined as fake and the victim not hearing back from the suspect.
