COLLINS: Does the new year bring new hope?

Jan 4, 2026 | 6:00 AM

AS WE MAKE OUR WAY through this wild and crazy journey called Life, we will be faced with challenges we may not have anticipated. We can work around many of them by making better choices, eating healthier, getting more exercise. We can deal with those by being more disciplined, by grabbing the bull by the horns, so to speak, and changing our lifestyles by our own efforts.

There are others however who have lost their way. These are the homeless, the addicts, men, women and more and more young people who have to fight their demons on their own, or at best with limited support from the community.

There are the seniors, those who have been shoved into facilities that were never designed to be anything more than a glorified prison. We are building new and better care facilities but they are often outside the financial ability of seniors to qualify for admittance.

And there are those facing end-of-life decisions that tear apart entire families.

I’m not even going to touch the global crisis. We have no real way of dealing with something of that magnitude.

So as you relax today, watching some football or reading a book, keep some time aside to think about some areas where you could help. It may be something small, but any effort might make the difference. If we all did what we could, change is possible. It’s really a matter of taking the first step.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
