Operation Red Nose Kamloops gearing up for New Year’s Eve service

KAMLOOPS — Operation Red Nose Kamloops is gearing up for one final night of service this holiday season.

The safe ride home service will be available between 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. this New Years’ Eve evening, though coordinator Lucas Sweet believes they’ll operate past that time to ensure everyone gets home safely.

“We have more volunteer teams this year that we have had in the last couple of years,” Sweet told CFJC. “So we are ready to go for the high demand that New Year’s Eve gives us. That’s our biggest night.”

Operation Red Nose began its 29th season of operations in Kamloops on Nov. 28, and Sweet said they were able to fill 243 volunteers positions this year, with approximately 66 teams of three on the road.

“We’re ready to give you rides,” Sweet added, noting they provided 60 rides on new year’s eve last year. “Last year, a little bit of problem was wait times. We haven’t been experiencing that this year because we have the capacity to handle more rides.”

There were 434 rides completed in Kamloops during last year’s Operation Red Nose campaign, which raised over $17,000 for PacificSport Interior BC. Sweet said this year’s totals will be released early in the new year once the campaign wraps up.

Sweet said this year’s campaign has been slower, but he attributed that to people making other plans to get home safely or foregoing plans entirely because of tough economic circumstances.

“There is still community support and I think people still want Operation Red Nose and appreciate us trying to help keep our roads safe,” Sweet said. “The people who are still using it, they love the service.”
