Staff curated Who-ville display dazzles residents of Kamloops Seniors Village

The display started as a door decorating contest (which KSV still does), and then grew into larger displays for a friendly competition with the maintenance team. But for this third year of doing it, the second floor care aides have gone all out. Kamloops Seniors Village decorates the facility every year for Christmas, but to create the special display on the second floor, staff spent weeks bringing in their own decorations, painting backgrounds to match the theme, and setting everything up.

“Just the joy that it brings them,” says healthcare assistant Liana Lundrigan, who was donning a matching Grinch themed-scrub top alongside her coworker Zieger, “Plus the residents on the full care side get to come over and they do little tours, and it’s quite fun. It really is.”

The bright display has made the foyer a popular spot amongst residents.

“It just reminds me of Christmas and it’s a wonderful display,” says KSV resident Ruth Thorne, “The staff worked very hard to put it up. And it just makes for a real nice Christmas.”

While the effort poured into gathering supplies, painting displays, and setting it all up invokes nostalgia.

“I like the presents when we open them. Santa’s elves. We always did it at Christmas from the time I was six months old. My parents would do this in the living room,” recalls Tom Learie, another KSV resident, “We had pillowcases over our heads and we’d march in and pull them off and say ‘yahoo’! It was wonderful.”

That appreciation is certainly felt from the half a dozen care aides who spent weeks creating Whoville. The theme for next year is a secret. But the team says it will be just as dazzling.

“We’ve already planned next year and it’s not even finished with this year,” laughs Zieger.
