All chairlifts at Sun Peaks turning; Stake Lake ski trails open, while Harper Mountain suffers ‘setback’

SUN PEAKS, B.C. — All of the chairlifts at Sun Peaks Resort are turning for the first time this ski season.

In an update, Sun Peaks Resort said the Sundance Express and Orient chairlifts would begin operations Saturday (Dec. 20), just in time for the holidays.

“Recent snowfall coupled with continued snowmaking efforts have gotten us over the finish line,” resort staff said in a statement. “Opening the remainder of our key chairlifts provides more access and movement across the mountains with important ski-in/ski-out routes.”

However, while all chairlifts are turning, not all alpine trails at the Kamloops-area ski resort are open just yet. The latest on lift and trail status can be found here.

“We expect to open additional trails in the days to come as operations teams work the fresh snow that continues to fall,” Sun Peaks added, noting there are 85+ alpine trails open as of Saturday.

The majority of backcountry Nordic trails are also open at Sun Peaks, with the latest status updates available here.

Sun Peaks Resort began the 2025/26 ski season on Nov. 27, one week later than initially planned because of mild conditions.

“Early-season conditions are present on the mountain,” resort staff added. “We ask guests to make good choices and respect all terrain closures in place for your safety and for the safety of our on-mountain teams.”

Harper Mountain and Stake Lake opening

Over at Harper Mountain, while the tube park is currently open daily, staff are reporting a setback because of warmer temperatures.

“We were so close, but had a set back with the warm temperatures and high winds that blasted us earlier this week,” a social media post from Harper Mountain said. “The top of the mountain is still in great shape, but we do need more snow to open the ski lifts.”

“There is snow in the forecast and we will open as soon as we can.”

It’s also opening day at the Stake Lake ski trails south of Kamloops, though the dog trails remain closed because of insufficient snow.

“The rest of the system is early season conditions,” the Overlander Ski Club said in a social media post. “Very thin in spots around east Cartwheel, South Rustler, Cowpoke, Lookout and very southern part of Drifter.”

“As always, use caution.”

Both Harper Mountain and the Stake Lake ski trails were aiming to be open by last Saturday, Dec. 13, though those plans had to be delayed because of the weather.
