SALMON ARM, B.C. — Two people were arrested after attempts to stop a reported stolen pickup truck making its way through the Shuswap last month ended with a strike from a train.

At around 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 26, Salmon Arm RCMP say officers attempted to stop a stolen white Ford E-250 van out of New Westminster, but it evaded police near Sorrento and drove into oncoming traffic.

Nearly an hour later, police say the duo left their van behind and reportedly stole a man’s Ford F-350 pickup truck from his driveway in Sorrento.

The Salmon Arm detachment says Sicamous RCMP eventually found the stolen pickup and attempted to stop it, but it rammed the police vehicle and escaped from officers again.

Further east, Revelstoke RCMP setup a spike belt and deflated the truck’s front tire, with one tire falling off the vehicle entirely, but it continued to drive eastbound on the Trans Canada Highway.

A second tire on the pickup was deflated by a spike belt set up further ahead by a Sicamous RCMP officer. Police say the F-350 turned onto a forest service road and came to a stop on the train tracks.

However, a train horn blared when officers went to arrest the duo.

Salmon Arm RCMP say a slow-moving train, estimated to be going 18km/h, struck the rear driver’s side of the F-350, spinning it around.

A 31-year-old man and 31-year-old woman got out of the truck and ran away from the scene but were eventually arrested a short distance away.

“Salmon Arm RCMP are recommending multiple charges against the occupants of the vehicle including theft of vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and assault with a weapon,” Cst. Andrew Hodges, Salmon Arm RCMP media relations officer says.

In a news release issued Friday (Dec. 12), RCMP say the man and women were later sent to hospital out of caution, but they had no apparent injuries.
