Snowfall warning issued for Coquihalla Summit; strong wind gusts expected for Kamloops and area

KAMLOOPS — Another round of weather alerts is in effect for Kamloops and area.

A snowfall warning was issued for the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt as Environment Canada is forecasting 25 to 35 centimetres of snowfall near the summit from Tuesday (Dec. 16) morning to Wednesday night.

“Snowfall totals for today during the day are five to 10 centimetres, while 10 to 20 centimetres is expected overnight with an additional 10 to 15 centimetres likely on Wednesday,” Environment Canada states. “Snow may be at times mixed with rain late this afternoon and this evening as the snow levels rise to near the summit. Areas south of the summit are expected to see rain, with totals ranging 40 to 50 millimetres.”

The weather agency notes wind gusts of up to 70 km/h are expected to pick up overnight which could lead to local blowing snow on the stretch of Highway 5.

“Travel will likely be challenging,” Environment Canada adds. “Road closures are possible. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly, resulting in hazardous driving conditions. Allow extra time for travel. If driving, turn on your lights, slow down and maintain a safe following distance.”

A snowfall warning is also in effect for the Trans Canada Highway from Sicamous to Golden as 20 to 30 centimetres is expected between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

Both snowfall warnings are due to another Pacific frontal system moving into the interior.

Elsewhere, a special weather statement from Environment Canada is calling for strong southwesterly wind gusts for the 100 Mile, Cariboo, Fraser Canyon, Nicola and South Thompson regions, along with the Coquihalla Highway from Kamloops to Hope, the Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna and Highway 97 from Clinton to 100 Mile House via Begbie Summit.

“A vigorous cold front will move across the B.C. interior tonight,” Environment Canada says. “These strong winds may lead to possible tree damages, local power outages and travel delay.”

Winds are expected to ease Wednesday morning.
