Small art making a big difference for Kamloops Arts Council

KAMLOOPS – SMALL // works – A great big, teeny tiny art show is currently on display at the Old Courthouse in Kamloops until Saturday (Dec. 20). All of the art sold at the event is priced under $300, with most under $100.

The exhibit helps raise funds for the Kamloops Arts Council and helps fund local artists with a 50-50 share of sales.

“What the show mainly does is help us with things that we don’t get funded for, like our operating costs, instructors. It also helps with any kind of new deposits that we have to put down at the beginning of the year for Children’s Arts Festival and Art in the Park, which happens on Canada Day,” said Tanya Nielsen, executive director at the Kamloops Arts Council.

Paula Ducharme is one of more than 50 artists from across the Thompson-Nicola region creating unique pieces for SMALL // works.

“For the jewelry, I usually go out and look for thrifted things. I head to Value Village and I find a couple of cool pendants or jewelry pieces that have some interesting beads. Then I take them home, deconstruct them and then remake them into some newer pieces,” said Ducharme.

More than 260 art pieces are on display at the exhibit, including those under the age of 12 participating in the extra SMALL // works program.

“You’re getting to know local artists in your community and that can be really important for not only building community, but having recognition of it as an artist, especially as a younger artist. That can mean almost everything. It can inspire you to keep going,” said Ducharme.

The Kamloops Arts Council says artwork from this show would make a perfect holiday gift.

“These are unique gifts and, unlike our other exhibitions, you just come, you pay for it, and then you can take it home with you right away,” said Nielsen.
