CSRD proposing to raise landfill tipping fees in 2026
SALMON ARM, B.C. — The Columbia Shuswap Regional District is proposing to raise tipping fees at its landfills in 2016, with additional costs for those who opt not to sort their recyclable materials.
During their regular meeting on Friday (Dec. 12), the CSRD board of directors voted to support three readings of a bylaw to increase the rates charged for when waste is dropped off at local landfills and transfer stations.
In a news release, the CSRD says a new minimum $5 fee for using the landfill will be added. However, exemptions would exist, such as FireSmart-approved garden and yard waste, books and clothing for recycling, invasive plants, household hazardous waste, residential recyclables and $3 per bag for bagged refuse. Free garden and yard waste disposal will be available for one month in the spring and fall.
Additionally, the cost of disposing refuse at a CSRD landfill would be $100/tonne and $350/tonne for a mixed load without recyclables removed, up from $90/tonne and $270/tonne, respectively.
