KAMLOOPS — Strong winds are expected for Kamloops and area Monday (Dec. 15) afternoon.

In a special weather statement, Environment Canada says a strong low-pressure system moving across the southern Interior will bring southwest winds with gusts of 70-to-90 km/h this afternoon and evening.

The statement covers the Nicola and South Thompson regions, along with the Coquihalla Highway from Kamloops to Merritt and the Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna.

“Merritt may not see winds as strong as the rest of the region as it is sheltered,” Environment Canada said. “The winds are expected to pick up this afternoon and weaken by late evening. Local utility outages are possible. Secure loose objects. Exercise caution when driving in crosswind prone areas.”

A yellow level wind warning is also in place for the Fraser Canyon, with gusts of 80 to 90 km/h expected.

The Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt is also under a rainfall warning as 60-to-80 mm of precipitation is expected.

Elsewhere, travel advisories are in effect for both Highway 1 between Hope and Lytton and the Coquihalla between Hope and Merritt. Both highways are open, though the Ministry of Transportation and Transit says there may be closures due to the risk of debris flows, flooding or washouts.

It’s urging drivers to delay travel if possible or exercise caution and consider an alternate route, if possible.

Like Highway 1 from Hope to Lytton, Highway 99 from Lillooet to Pemberton was also proactively closed overnight, though it has also reopened.
