ONE MAN'S OPINION

COLLINS: The free-for-all in politics

WHEN SPECULATION ABOUT ELECTIONS starts hitting the gossip trails, I will have — as most reporters — already started the journey to get down to the basics. What does the party believe? How much faith do we have that they will carry out the party’s goals and work hard for the people who have placed their trust in that candidate?

The most important things I look for are integrity and trust. If I don’t feel the candidates have the integrity to stand by their principles, they don’t get my vote. If the candidate flip-flops over issues, same thing — no ‘X’ on that.

Given the number of Conservatives who are talking about abandoning Pierre Polievre, I give a positive shoutout to our own MP, Frank Caputo, who has said he will not cross the floor. That effort alone heightens my faith that here is a man who could be trusted.

If criminal activity or illegal activity were to surface, that’s something different all together. But for a normal day on the farm, I put my vote in the candidate I trust so, even though my politics are not Conservative, it would take a lot of thought before I would consider shifting my vote.
