KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are urging people to be wary of scams this holiday season after a senior was defrauded out of $5,000 in a gift card scam on Monday (Dec. 8).

According to the RCMP, the scammer – who claimed to be calling from a bank – convinced the senior that their accounts had been compromised. They directed the senior to buy $5,000 worth of gift cards and provide the numbers over the phone.

“We would like to remind everyone that scammers target our community every day,” Sandro Piroddi, the Kamloops RCMP’s Crime Prevention Coordinator, said. “Please remember that banks, and government agencies will never ask for gift cards or for payments to be made over the phone.”

Kamloops RCMP say people can learn more about the red flags to watch for in the most common types of scams, at the BC RCMP Frauds and Scams, Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or the Competition Bureau of Canada.
