KAMLOOPS — A Quebec company which is being a wind farm that was selected by BC Hydro as part of its 2024 call for power is eyeing land in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) for a portion of its project.

Located between Merritt and Kelowna, Innergex is planning to build the K2 wind project near the Pennask Summit, with an estimated 25 wind turbines and a expected project life of 30 years once operational.

The company hopes to finalize its plans and begin construction in 2029, with the goal of getting the wind mills operational in 2031.

“Right now we targeting just shy of 160 megawatts of energy, and I love these energy projects, so that is 40,000 B.C. households, and that will equal about 25 turbines, give or take,” Kate Schendel, the Environment Manager with Innergex said at the Dec. 11 TNRD meeting.

“We will be doing many many iterations of our layout and design over the next couple of years. We already have some lidar and some met towers installed to help study the project area.”

Innergex has projects throughout North America as well as France and Chile. It is looking at partnering with the Westbank First Nation to build the K2 wind farm.

“As far as the project economic benefits, there will be quite a few during the construction period,” Schendel added. “We expect 150 workers during the construction period. We are looking at staging, and housing and accommodations for those workers, and trying to create opportunities for the nations.”

Two other Kamloops-area wind projects – the 143-megawatt Mount Mabel Wind project and the 197-megawatt Highland Valley Wind project – were also selected by BC Hydro as part of its 2024 call for power last December.
