HOPE, B.C. — The B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit has confirmed that the Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3) between Hope and Manning Park sustained extensive damage as a result of this week’s extreme precipitation events.

In a brief statement issued Thursday (Dec. 11), the Ministry said a full ground assessment of the highway corridor has revealed approximately 23 damaged sites consisting of rockfall, roadway debris, shoulder undermining, exposed or blocked culverts, and areas of ponding water.

It noted there was one priority site where a culvert is fully exposed will take the longest to repair.

“Engineering teams are preparing drawings and recommendations, and contractors will mobilize tonight to begin work,” the Ministry said, noting single-lane alternating traffic is not possible due to undermining.

There is no estimated time of reopening at this point, and the Ministry will provide updates as information becomes available.

The eastern Fraser Valley got hammered by a deluge of precipitation Wednesday. According to Environment Canada, Hope Airport reported totals between 140 and 145 mm of rain over the course of Wednesday, while Cultus Lake saw 125 millimetres, the Chilliwack Airport reported 110 millimetres and Agassiz saw 103 mm of rainfall.

Manning Park Resort posted to Facebook on Thursday that it has postponed its alpine opening day due to the recent heavy rainfall.

“A colder system is on the way, and we’ll be reassessing conditions over the next few days,” the resort said. “In the meantime… let’s all send a little love to the snow gods for cooler temps and powder, not rain! We’re keeping our fingers crossed for an opening next week. Stay tuned!”
