More units added to rental housing development at former North Shore car dealership
KAMLOOPS — Plans have changed for a previously proposed rental housing development on the North Shore.
During Tuesday’s (Dec. 9) regular meeting, Kamloops council approved a 150-unit residential rental building at 1024 Eighth Street, the site of the former Country Auto Sales building, by a vote of 8-0. Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson declared a conflict of interest and left council chambers during discussion.
The project, known as The Pulse on 8th, was slated to have around 190 units of rental housing available. One six-storey building would have featured 126 units of rental housing while another six-storey building would feature 65 units of affordable seniors housing, with both buildings including commercial space on the bottom.
The Pulse of 8th originally received approval from council in 2024. According to a report presented to council this week, a revised permit was approved for the contactor – Tri City Canada – to expand the larger building to 150 units, citing amendments to the zoning bylaw that reduces parking requirements throughout the city. The report says 15 of the units will be earmarked for social housing.
