SALMON ARM, B.C. — (UPDATE 1:00 p.m.): BC RCMP say one person was killed in a head-on crash between a Buick sedan and a semi-truck on the Trans-Canada Highway in Salmon Arm Sunday (Dec. 7) night.

Police say the driver of the Buick was pronounced dead at the scene, just east of 20 Ave NE in Salmon Arm, while the driver and passenger in the semi were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

According to the RCMP, the westbound Buick crossed the centre line into the oncoming lanes just before 9:00 p.m. Sunday, though its not clear why. Mounties note the driver of the semi was not able to avoid the crash despite their best efforts.

“The Salmon Arm RCMP would like to offer their condolences to the friends and family of the person who died,” BC RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brett Urano said.

Urano said police have viewed dash cam video of the crash, noting it was “instrumental” helping them understand what transpired. They also note the semi driver is cooperating with the investigation.

“We would like to always remind the public to slow down and drive to the conditions,” Urano added. “Additionally, please remember to use winter tires this winter.”

According to DriveBC, the stretch of Highway 1 between 30th Street NE and Canoe Beach Drive in Salmon Arm reopened at 1:45 a.m. Monday (Dec. 8), after a roughly four-hour closure.
