Skier Safety

New skiKrumb tracking device hopes to be ‘as essential as helmets’ for skier safety

SUN PEAKS, B.C. – skiKrumb is a tracking device created after its founder and owner, Keith MacIntyre, went skiing with his son and became separated. They eventually found each other, but spurred on by the incident, he created the technology.

The device is connected to an app on mobile phones and pings the location every 10 seconds. MacIntyre hopes the device will become a game-changer in mountain safety.

“Cell-based devices don’t always work as well as you think on the mountain,” he said. “We use radio rather than cell to transmit, and we can cover vastly larger areas of the mountain.”

Devices like an Apple AirTag, while good for finding lost personal items, are not made to track people on a ski hill, especially if skiers move out of bounds.

“People will often buy an AirTag but don’t know you need to be within 30 feet of an iPhone for an AirTag to work, which is just not appropriate on a ski hill,” MacIntyre added. “Whereas ours will work virtually anywhere on the scale every 10 seconds, and you know exactly where the person is.”

SunPeaks is in its second year of working with skiKrumb and local officials are excited for future partnership.

“skiKrumb itself is helping to track that shuttle and allowing guests to really know when that shuttle is going to be arriving at a stop. I think it’s a great partnership to look forward to,” added Naomi Kerchinsky, the Executive Director at Tourism Sun Peaks.

The company is looking to expand to ski hills across North America in the next few years, and MacIntyre is hoping the device will eventually become as important to skiing as helmets are.

“We’re actually growing quite rapidly. So in year one, we were at Big White and Apex, and last year we added Sun Peaks, Revelstoke, and Silver Star. This year we have Le Massif in Quebec. Mount Washington is a new customer of ours as well,” MacIntyre said.

The device costs $199 with a yearly $50 activation fee but can be rented for $20 a day at select stores.
