OPERATION: RED NOSE

Kamloops RCMP, BC Highway Patrol reiterate safe ride home message with weekend check points

KAMLOOPS — Police officers in Kamloops and across British Columbia were out in force this past weekend as part of their Light Up the Province Campaign.

“So we had police officers out with our BC Highway Patrol and we had multiple check stops throughout the community and the highways just reminding drivers, and checking drivers for their sobriety while they’re driving,” Kamloops RCMP Media Relations Officer Cpl. Dana Napier said.

Consuming alcohol or drugs and getting behind the wheel can have serious or even deadly consequences. It can also land someone an expensive ticket, driving prohibitions, or criminal charges. With that in mind, RCMP recommend making other arrangements for a ride at the end of a night out.

“Make sure you have a safe ride home. There’s lots of different varieties out there, options to use,” reiterated Napier. “We have Operation Red Nose, cab services and then there’s also other designated drivers. Or plan to stay the night if you’re able to as well.”

Operation Red Nose, a seasonal designated driving service which raises proceeds for PacificSport Interior BC, is hoping to provide hundreds of by-donation rides.

“Last year we hit 434 (rides). So this year we’re trying to get that extra 700 rides and hit that 500 mark,” Operation Red Nose Kamloops coordinator Lucas Sweet said. “We’re a little bit behind, so we need people to use the service so we can get to that goal.”

Calls to Operation Red Nose tend to ramp up closer to Christmas and New Year’s, and Sweet says Red Nose is looking for more volunteers to get party-goers home safely.

“Especially for New Year’s Eve. That is not surprising to anyone as its our busiest day and our most high demand day,” Sweet said. “We also get the lowest amount of volunteers that day.”

“It’s a fun night. If you have nothing to do, it’s a fun night and a lot of stories are going to come from it.”

Volunteer sign-ups can be done on the PacificSport Interior website, and people who need a ride can call Operation Red Nose at 250-372-5110.
