Work to reopen Sun Peaks health centre still ongoing

SUN PEAKS, B.C. — With ski season underway, officials at Sun Peaks say work to reopen the community’s health clinic, which has been closed for the past two months, is still ongoing.

Speaking at the Dec. 2 council meeting, CAO Deanna Campbell said the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality (SPMRM) is working with Dr. Catherine Nowierski, who was picked as the clinic’s new operator after a Request for Proposals (RFP) process.

“Currently, a draft agreement is being worked on,” Campbell said. “We know it may not seem or feel like it, but as one of my staff pointed out, we’re actually moving through a really complex process quicker than what happened in any other situation.”

The Sun Peaks medical clinic has been closed since Oct. 10, after council voted to end the lease held by the Supporting Team Excellence with Patients Society’s (STEPS).

“We have been and we will continue to collaborate and work with Dr. Nowierski on reopening the clinic,” Campbell added. “We just want to emphasize and reiterate that getting the health centre reopened as soon as possible remains a priority.”

STEPS had been operating the Sun Peaks clinic since 2023, O’Toole previously told CFJC Today that the clinic had gone from operating five days a week to three days a week.

“We just came to a decision that it was in the best interest of the long-term healthcare success in our community – and for STEPS as well so they can focus their energies elsewhere – that we not renew the lease and take things in a new direction,” O’Toole added.

In October, Sun Peaks Mayor Rob O’Toole also asked residents to “trust in this process,” following concerns that were raised about the lack of medical services in the community.

“I truly believe that we’re going to come out the other end better for it. I know at times it can feel a little bit stressful as we’re going through that process,” O’Toole said.

“Every storm runs out of rain, and these are important times, but we just need to have patience and know that the decision in the end, will be in the best interest of the community.”
