Six-storey, 90-unit rental building for 55+ adults slated for Glenwood Drive property in Valleyview
KAMLOOPS — The proponents behind a controversial Valleyview apartment building are proposing to earmark the entire development as seniors’ rental housing for people over the age of 55.
In a report going before Tuesday’s (Dec. 9) meeting, city staff say the proponents have applied for a development permit for a six-storey, 90-unit, purpose-built rental apartment building at 2001 Glenwood Drive, near the intersection with Oriole Road.
In January, city councillors approved a rezoning application to allow up to 120 units on that property near Valleyview Secondary School. Council also greenlit a variance to increase the maximum height of the future building from four to six storeys, much to the dismay of some area residents.
“The applicant has indicated that the building will be an independent-living seniors’ rental community designed specifically for residents aged 55 and older,” the staff report said. “It is also worth noting that the property…will meet the minimum vehicle parking requirements (78 spaces required; 79 proposed).”
