KAMLOOPS — The recent spell of wintry weather in the Kamloops area is welcome news to the operators of two outdoor recreational destinations.

Both the Harper Mountain Ski Resort and the Stake Lake ski trails could open next Saturday (Dec. 13), though operators at both facilities say those dates are still tentative.

“Things are looking very good at the mountain,” staff at Harper Mountain said in a post on social media. “Our team is working hard to get the ski runs open. This requires packing, brush cutting and grooming.”

“We will be open for skiing as soon as possible and we will update you the minute we have confirmation.”

Meanwhile, the Overlander Ski Club, which operates the ski trails at Stake Lake, is also hard at work getting things ready for the winter season.

“[Next weekend’s opening] is pending the weather stays cold and we get a few more centimetres of forecasted snow,” club staff said on social media. “The trails right now are wet snow that we are working on packing. Please continue to stay off them so we can set up a good base for this winter season.”

The tube park at Harper Mountain is set to open this Sunday, Dec. 7 between 12:00 noon and 4:00 p.m. It will also be open next weekend – Dec. 13 and 14 – and then will be open daily starting Dec. 20, which is the first day of the SD73 winter break.

Sun Peaks Resort had to delay its season by about a week, and the Kamloops-area resort is gradually ramping up operations.
