Sun Peaks gears up for long season ahead

SUN PEAKS, B.C. – The mountain resort municipality of Sun Peaks is ready for its busiest time of year with local and international travellers heading to the holiday destination. The resort is looking at an incredibly busy year with more events and hoping for a tourism boost from a recent Netflix film, “My Secret Santa”.

While less than half of the runs are currently open, big snow dumps have helped the resort set up for the ski season. Sun Peaks had to delay its opening by one week, but had to do that last year as well.

“Our pacing right now, going into winter, is a double-digit increase in every single month. We’re coming off our best ski season ever last year. Right now, our pacing is super strong heading into this year,” said Naomi Kerchinsky, executive director of Tourism Sun Peaks.

Businesses in Sun Peaks note a slower start to the season but expect the later parts to ramp up.

“We came in with a little bit of a slow start, but things have been turning around really quickly. The nice part about here at Sun Peaks is that we don’t need a ton of snow to get really good coverage. With the snow we’ve been getting lately, everything’s opening up really quickly,” said Derek McGowan, owner of Jardines.

Bolacco owner Konrad Glowczynski agreed but says his staff are ready for anything the season has due to their 30 years of business.

“It is a slower opening, but it’s happened before and we are ready for it. There’s no problem with having it like this. There’ll be a lot of months that will be busy,” said Glowczynski.

Conditions on the mountain are improving, however only 22 per cent of the runs are open. The Sun Peaks staff are hoping for more snow so they can open up the rest of the mountain.

“Conditions are really awesome up top right now. We went up yesterday for a few laps and I was actually surprised by how good I actually got some powder laps. Today is calling for extra snow,” said Aaron MacDonald, chief marketing and communications officer at Sun Peaks Resort.

Sun Peaks says it has seen more interest from the United States, thanks to the Ikon Pass, and from Canada’s east coast. For more information on Sun Peaks and events taking place there, you can visit their website.
