B-100 Toy House Campaign gathering new, unwrapped toys for Christmas Amalgamated

KAMLOOPS — The start of December marks a critical time for local charities looking to collect donations for their holiday campaigns to help out people in need. Many of the toys Christmas Amalgamated is able to provide to families over the holidays come from the B-100 Toy House Campaign, which is now in full swing.

There are a few weeks left to send donations down the chimneys of those toy houses, ahead of the big collection day.

“It’s just a lot of fun. You get to feel like you’re a part of something bigger than yourself,” says campaign organizer and B-100/CIFM announcer Kayla Derkach.

Toys for all ages are accepted — they just have to be new and Derkach says you can skip the wrapping paper.

“If you wrap them, unfortunately we will have to unwrap them because of the way they just get organized for the hampers and stuff like that,” she explains. “We would prefer unwrapped, brand new toys for kids from age three all the way up to even 14. That’s kind of the age range we’re seeing this year.”

The campaign has become a large supplier of the gifts families pick out at Christmas Amalgamated to take home for their children and teens.

“That is major. Because it helps us finish off the last of what we need because by then, everything is pretty well drained. It also gives us the opportunity to pack up some of it for our stock base for the following year,” says Christmas Amalgamated coordinator Sally Whitson.

Every year, those presents are distributed to around 2,000 families, in conjunction with holiday meal supplies.

“We’re starting to get into the hamper season now, so we’re going to need the food brought in so we can start building the hampers,” adds Whitson.

A large operation in a short time frame, that Derkach says requires a lot of people power to make happen.

“If you can’t donate monetary wise, maybe donate your time and help out doing deliveries, making up those hampers, things like that,” she notes.

Toys can be dropped off at Toy Houses around the city up until December 21, with pick-up day scheduled for December 22.
