LANGFORD, B.C. — The Kamloops Junior Bantam Broncos are provincial champions.

The Broncos — comprised of players aged 12 and 13 years old — beat the Westshore Warriors 11-6 at Starlight Stadium Sunday (Nov. 30) to win the 9-man provincial title.

You can watch a replay of the championship game here.

The Broncos led 8-0 after the first quarter though Westshore responded with six points to make it 8-6 at the half. Kamloops added a field goal in the fourth quarter at Starlight Stadium to extend their lead to five points.

Jack Philbeam scored the Broncos’ touchdown from a deep ball into the end zone by quarterback Morgen Brodersen. While Westshore threatened on numerous occasions, the Broncos defensive line lead by Elias Dyck, Jaiden Jacobson and Weston Reddick shut them down with numerous tackles and huge stops to force turnovers.

Kamloops won the Southern Interior Football Conference (SIFC) championship last month with a 41-34 win over an undefeated Kelowna grey team.

“Most of these players have been playing together starting from Atoms and they have always had the goal of not only beating the talented and heavy Kelowna Grey teams but also become the SIFC champions since they were young,” Melisa Dyck, with Kamloops Community Football said.

“Going to provincials is a privilege and winning the provincial title is something these players will never forget.”

This was the first provincial championship won by a Kamloops Community Football Team since the peewee team won the title in 2016.

The peewee team also won a Southern Interior trophy this season, but they were beaten by Cloverdale in the semis and missed out on provincials.
