SUN PEAKS, B.C. — It’s opening day at Sun Peaks Resort, as the Kamloops-area ski resort gears up for the 2025-26 winter season, one week later than initially planned.

While both the Sunburst Express and Elevation chairlifts will begin turning at 9:00 a.m. today (Nov. 27), Sun Peaks will be operating with very limited terrain as just two runs – Cahilty and 5 Mile – will be accessible.

Two other runs – OSV and Lower Chute – are open only to athletes who have rented lanes for early season race training.

“The reality is, the weather has not been overly cooperative as of late, with milder than average temperatures and low snowfall throughout most areas of Western Canada, an update from Sun Peaks Resort said, noting all other terrain and trails are closed.

“It’s imperative to follow closures and do not venture across ropes or onto closed trails. This is for your safety and the safety of our teams.”

Sun Peaks was set to open for the season this past Saturday (Nov. 22) though it was forced to delay opening date because of mild conditions.

“The snow surface is primarily from our snow making system and the base is not deep, so please expect early season conditions across all open areas,” Sun Peaks added.

“With temperatures forecast to stay below our threshold of -2.5 C for good snowmaking, our snowmaking system will continue pumping out the white stuff and we know that Mother Nature should show up in full force real soon.”

The resort is offering alpine lift tickets at a 50 per cent discount for the first few days as it gradually ramps up operations. People with pre-purchased lift tickets between Nov. 27 and 30 will automatically get partial refunds.

The 2025-26 ski season at Sun Peaks Resort is scheduled to end on Easter Monday, April 6, 2026.
