KAMLOOPS — The first shovel was ceremonially dug into the earth on Wednesday (Nov. 26) afternoon at the site of the future Kamloops Centre for the Arts.

Amid continued opposition from a small but vocal section of the public and mayor, the groundbreaking ceremony was officially held for the Kamloops Centre for the Arts.

“This is what we hope for — that there will be a larger stage for children to stand on, for those who have nurtured their talents and their skills with instruments and their speaking abilities to stand in this extraordinary place,” said Deputy Mayor Katie Neustaeter.

Those opposed to the project speak to the increasing price tag, that could reach $211 million dollars if contingencies are expended, but Build Kamloops Chair Kelly Hall expects it to come in below that figure.

“I think we’ve heard $211 million. That has been accounted for — every contractor, every person that will be working on the Centre for the Arts will be a partner to account for all the funds that are going be spoken for,” said Hall. “And in fact, I’m going to suggest that we will probably come under those funds.”

Hall confirmed every penny has been accounted for with a third party audit, and residents won’t see more than the already approved 1 per cent tax increase.

“The funding is available in the community and it’s not going to cost the taxpayer any more dollars than what has currently been asked for,” said Hall.

The project is the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, fundraising and campaigning.

“It’s spectacular. It’s been 10 years for me, being very much involved and it’s an excitement. I can see us at the first performance. I’ll live for that,” joked Ron Fawcett.

It was also announced on Wednesday that the project received an anonymous $1 million donation last week. The arts centre is slated to open in 2029.
