KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops RCMP and the City of Kamloops Crime Prevention Unit have kicked off the ‘Safe for the Season’ campaign at local malls.

Volunteers with the Crime Prevention Unit will be actively patrolling malls, plazas and other retail areas to help deter potential theft, and also remind the public to be smart with their holiday purchases.

“We want people to be cautious all year long, but during these times of year when people are out holiday shopping, typically some people have bigger purchases and they leave them in their vehicle longer than they should. We just don’t want them to be stolen,” said Sandro Piroddi, Kamloops Crime Prevention Unit coordinator.

The unit is handing out tip cards with simple suggestions to help reduce crime during the holidays. Many times, gifts are stolen in crimes of opportunity, ensuring purchases are not left in vehicles removes that possibility.

“The RCMP volunteers will be out in the community throughout the holiday shopping season. They will be engaging with people when they can. There will be presence in retail parking lots,” added Piroddi. “And they will be placing crime prevention tip cards on vehicles just reminding them to secure their valuables and keep stuff out of sight.”
