KAMLOOPS — A new scholarship for students attending Thompson Rivers University (TRU) has officially launched, a little over two years after it was first announced.

The ‘Friends of Ukraine Award’ will offer a $1,000 annual scholarship to one undergraduate or graduate student at TRU who is connected to Ukraine through heritage, culture or community involvement.

“This award recognizes students who maintain connections to Ukrainian culture and heritage while pursuing their education in Canada,” said Oleksandr Kondrashov, the Stand with Ukraine Kamloops organizer and TRU associate professor, in an email.

“It honours those who stand with Ukraine during this critical time in history.”

Eligible applicants must be one of the following:

  • Students of Ukrainian heritage
  • Students involved in Ukrainian community activities
  • Students learning Ukrainian language or culture
  • Students supporting Ukraine through activism or volunteer work
  • CUAET visa holders studying at TRU

Kondrashov began raising funds for this scholarship in 2023, and it will be awarded for the first time in 2026.

Applicants are required to submit a 250-word essay outlining their eligibility for the award. Those essays need to be sent to Reuben Onyango, the Director of International Student Services at TRU World by email before Dec. 31, 2025.

Questions about the award should be directed to Kondrashov here while TRU-related inquiries should be directed to Tatiana Gilbert by email or by calling 250-214-0055.
