Canada rugby men close out their European tour with 33-27 loss to Portugal
COIMBRA — Manuel Vareiro kicked 18 points and Portugal hung on for a 33-27 win over Canada on Saturday, ending the Canadian men’s November tour with a third straight loss.
Canada, ranked 24th in the world, lost 31-21 to No. 21 Romania on Nov. 8 in Bucharest, then fell 38-17 to No. 11 Georgia last Saturday in Batumi.
Canada coach Stephen Meehan says while it has been a challenging tour, from travel complications to difficult opponents, there have been pluses.
“There’s plenty of positives when you bring a squad that’s got a lot of young players in it,” he said. “This squad has some inexperience and that was paired with three competitive matches. Given the difficulties that we’ve experienced in terms of travel, the players have really held together. So overall happy with and proud of the way that the players have really stuck at it.”
