Sun Peaks Resort delays opening day by one week amid mild conditions

SUN PEAKS, B.C. — Skiers and snowboarders will need to wait another week to shred the gnar at Sun Peaks.

Sun Peaks Resort announced its opening day has been rescheduled to Thursday, Nov. 27, due to recent mild conditions. Opening day was originally scheduled for Saturday (Nov. 22).

While snow has fallen at higher elevations at Sun Peaks, the resort says there’s not enough to open for public skiing.

In a news release issued Tuesday, Sun Peaks Resort says snowmaking operations have also been paused amid mild conditions. However, they’re expected to restart early next week once cooler temperatures settle in.

“Long range weather forecasts are calling for a strong snow season in higher altitudes of the Northern hemisphere, including a weak La Niña,” Sun Peaks Resort states. “With a combination of natural and human-made snow, we’re staying positive about being back on the slopes for the winter 2025-26 season next week.”

When speaking with CFJC Today ahead of the winter season, officials with Sun Peaks Resort touted their new snow farming and storage system to help ensure reliable early-season alpine ski training.

As of Tuesday, the resort says it’s too early to determine what terrain will open at Sun Peaks for opening day, but an assessment will be made early next week.

Meantime, the resort says those who pre-purchased lessons, rentals or tickets for Nov. 22 to 26 will receive an automatic full refund.

The winter season at Sun Peaks is scheduled to run until April 6, 2026. While Sun Peaks Resort does not release its visitation data, it previously told CFJC Today that the 2024-25 ski season was “record-setting.”
