MERRITT, B.C. — The Nicola Valley Shelter and Support Society (NVSSS) is expanding its capacity in Merritt during periods of extreme cold this winter.

Lasting through March 31, 2026, the NVSSS says the emergency shelter at 2702 Nicola Ave. – the former Knights Inn hotel – will host an additional 10 beds whenever the temperature falls below -10 C. The shelter in Merritt already provides 40 beds for individuals experiencing homelessness.

In a news release issued Wednesday (Nov. 19), the NVSSS says its Extreme Weather Response (EWR) program is temporary and will only be activated during periods of extreme cold. The shelter operator doesn’t believe nearby residents will be disrupted.

“All guests accessing the EWR will go through our regular intake process, including wellness checks and support,” Nyasha Manyanye, NVSSS executive director says. “This initiative is a preventative, life-saving measure to ensure everyone has a safe place to stay when conditions become dangerous.”
