KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops woman’s annual charitable campaign, Purses for Women Helping Women, is ramping up in hopes of giving out more than 1,000 bags to women in need over the holidays.

She’s usually one of the faces of the North Shore Business Improvement Association, but at this time of the year, Patti Phillips becomes known as ‘the purse lady’. This will mark eight years of Phillips collecting gently used backpacks and purses filled with essentials to give to the women’s shelters in Kamloops and to distribute to women on the street.

“(I collect) all different kinds of women’s essentials. A lot of the women who are in the women’s shelter, they are on the run and they have nothing. Think about what you do every day — you know, toothbrush, toothpaste, all that kind of stuff,” explains Phillips. “But two of the most important things are socks and mitts or gloves because when they’re on the street, their feet or their hands get wet, and it’s nice to have another pair to go into.”

People can also donate monetarily for Phillips to go out and buy items for a bag, fill a purse themselves or get together as a group to fill multiple bags at once.

“Some people last year — which a few of them really made me cry — they put a card or a note inside the purse just to let them know that you are valued and we do care about you,” adds Phillips. “You know, stuff like that. I just think that’s such a kind thing to do.”

A full list of drop off locations can be found on the Purses for Women Helping Women Facebook page, and people can also call Patti directly at the NSBIA office at 250-376-2411.
