ASHCROFT, B.C. — Seniors in Ashcroft are expected to soon have more affordable rental options to call home.

The federal and B.C. governments announced nearly $887,000 in joint funding will go toward building 29 secure rental units for seniors at 710 Elm St. in Ashcroft. The joint funding is accompanied by a $4.7-million grant and just over $700,000 in annual operating funds from BC Housing, along with $240,000 in land equity from Interior Health.

According to the Thompson View Manor Society, the property at 710 Elm St. has 15 suites available in its independent living complex and 10 suites in its assisted living lodge. On its website, the society formed by community leaders in Ashcroft stated it was planning a second phase to build a two-storey, 29-unit affordable housing building for low-income seniors and people with disabilities.

In a news release issued Tuesday (Nov. 18), the federal government says the Thompson View Residences project will have a mix of one- and two-bedroom suites.

“The 29 new homes in Ashcroft will mean more of our seniors can remain in the community where they have worked, raised families, volunteered and forged connections. Thank-you to the federal and provincial governments, BC Housing and Interior Health for this affordable seniors’ housing,” said Ashcroft Mayor Barbara Roden.

The funding announcement comes in the wake of the 2025 federal budget’s passing. The federal government plans to spend more than $115 billion over 10 years to build affordable, inclusive and safe housing across the country.

A timeline for the Thompson View Residences project was not provided.
