KAMLOOPS — (UPDATE 2:08 p.m.): Kamloops RCMP say a woman is custody after she set fire to her own house before heading to nearby Lloyd George Elementary school, which was briefly put on ‘hold and secure’ Thursday (Nov. 13) afternoon.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dana Napier said police responded to “an incident on school property” around 12:40 p.m. following reports that a woman was suffering from a mental health crisis.

In a statement, Napier said the woman set fire to her house in the 700-block of Dominion Street, before she made her way to the school.

“Upon police arrival at the school the woman fled to a nearby residence and was located by police and apprehended,” Napier said. “The school proactively implemented a hold and secure in an effort to maintain the safety of the students.”

The ‘hold and secure’ was lifted once the woman was taken into police custody. Napier said Kamloops RCMP are working with School District 73 to investigate the incident.

Kamloops Fire Rescue crews made quick work of the fire, as they had it knocked down about 20 minutes after they got to the scene. Platoon Captain Shawn Davidson said there was significant damage to a room on the second floor of the house.

“We did a quick knock down of a room and contents fire on the second floor,” Davidson said. “There was no occupants inside so no injuries at this time.”

Davidson also said firefighters have determined that the fire was sparked inside the house.

“It was a quick knockdown for our guys,” Davidson added. “They did really well and gained entry and knocked the fire down. They did a search and didn’t find anything else in the house.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2025-37919.
