KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Blazers forward JP Hurlbert has been named an alternate captain of Team CHL at the upcoming 2025 CHL USA Prospects Challenge, which will take place on Nov. 25 in Calgary and Nov. 26 in Lethbridge..

The 17-year-old Hurlbert, who is the reigning WHL player of the month, will serve as alternate captain for the game in Calgary.

“It has been a great start to the season in the WHL with the Kamloops Blazers,” Hurlbert said in a statement via the WHL. “I’m looking forward to getting the opportunity to play with other top players with Team CHL.”

The ‘Texas Tornado’ leads the WHL in scoring with 35 points from 20 games. At one point, the native of Allen, Texas was the CHL’s points leader, but he currently trails Brantford’s Jake O’Brien, who has 37 points from 17 games.

Prior to joining the Blazers, Hurlbert led the U.S. National Team Development Program (NTDP) in scoring with 16 goals and 31 points during the 2024-25 season. He also had three assists in five games with Team USA at the 2024 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Last month, NHL Central Scouting dubbed Hurlbert as an ‘A’ prospect, meaning he is being projected as a potential first round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.

Brantford’s Caleb Malhotra was named captain for both games of the 2025 CHL USA Prospects Challenge. Defenceman Ryan Lin of the Vancouver Giants and Xavier Villeneuve of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada will serve as alternates for both games.

Prince Albert Raiders defenceman Daxon Rudolph will take over from Hurlbert as alternate captain for the Nov. 26 game in Lethbridge.
