KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers gave up five unanswered goals as they slumped to a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Edmonton Oil Kings in a Remembrance Day matinee at Sandman Centre.

The loss snapped the Blazers four game point streak, though they remain in fifth place in the WHL’s Western Conference with an 8-8-2-2 record, which is good for 20 points from 20 games.

The 15-4-1-1 Oil Kings remain atop the Eastern Conference standings with 32 points from 21 games.

Tuesday (Nov. 11) afternoon, the Blazers began well as they led 3-1 after one period at Sandman Centre.

Nathan Behm notched his 13th goal of the season with a bouncing one timer from the slot at 3:23 before Ryan Michael doubled the lead at 6:54 with his third goal in four games.

While Landon Hanson broke through on a breakaway and beat Ivans Kufterins short handed about five minutes later, Tommy Lafreniere restored the two-goal cushion at 18:09 of the first.

Then the Blazers’ offence dried up.

Lukas Sawchyn, Poul Andersen, Max Curran, and Joe Iginla all scored second period goals to put the Oil Kings up 5-1 after 40 minutes.

In came Logan Edmonstone to try and steady the ship, and he did, as Edmonton only managed an empty netter in the third period as Hanson scored his second of the game with about a minute to go.

While the Blazers were marginally better during the final 20 minutes, they only managed to fire seven shots on Ethan Simcoe’s net in the third period. Simcoe finished with 28 saves on 31 shots and the win.

Kufterins allowed five goals on 22 shots in a losing effort, while Edmonstone stopped all 13 shots he faced in relief.

Next up for the Blazers is a trip to Prince George to face the BC Division-leading Cougars this Friday (Nov. 14). They’ll then return home to host the Lethbridge Hurricanes the next night.

Ahead of Tuesday’s game, the Blazers announced they had called up 16-year-old goaltender Kaeden Tate from the Anaheim Jr. Ducks U16 AAA.

It’s possible that Tate gets into the line up for this weekend’s games, but its not clear whether he will make his WHL debut.
