Kamloops MP Caputo ‘not losing sleep’ over loss of two MPs

KAMLOOPS — The month of November has been shaky for the federal Conservative Party caucus as it faces the reality of a shrinking MP base.

It started with Nova Scotia MP Chris D’Entremont crossing the floor from the Tories to the governing Liberals. In addition to losing a member for the Conservatives, the departure meant the Liberals are inching closer to a majority in the House of Commons.

Despite the challenges, Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola MP Frank Caputo believes his party is still united.

“At the end of the day, you are going to have people who are disenchanted or are angry,” Caputo told CFJC Today. “With Chris D’Entremont, it was not a surprise. Everybody knew he was angry, he wasn’t chosen for deputy speaker, he was pretty vocal about that, that he was disgruntled. Frankly, it wasn’t a surprise when I heard floor-crossing rumours. To be candid, that is where my mind went, was to him.”

Just days later, the Conservative caucus was dealt another blow. Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux announced that he would resign his seat, however the exact time frame for his departure from Ottawa is not yet official.

“As Conservatives, we are a big tent party but we are united on a few key things. Fiscal conservatism is one of our key aspects,” said Caputo. “But really, we are united around small government, prudent government, being a responsible government, ethical spending, things like that.”

“This isn’t something that worries me. At the end of the day, we all chose to run under this party, under this banner just six months ago. We all knew what we were getting into, so it’s not something I lose sleep over.”
