RCMP say prank call from within NorKam Secondary prompted lockdown

KAMLOOPS — Police in Kamloops say the lockdown at NorKam Secondary last Thursday (Nov. 6) was the result of a prank call that came from inside the school and that no gun was ever in the building.

In an update Monday (Nov. 10), Kamloops RCMP said their investigation has led them to determine that a student used an unattended phone to make the prank call to police around 2:00 p.m. Thursday, saying there was a person in the school with a gun.

While RCMP said the student “associated to the phone” was briefly detained as part of the investigation, they did not specify whether it was the owner of the phone or the person who made the prank call.

CFJC has reached out the Kamloops RCMP for clarification.

NorKam was on lockdown for about 90 minutes while nearby Kamloops Christian School and the Chris Rose Therapy Centre were on a ‘hold and secure’ as dozens of officers rushed to the school Thursday afternoon.

“In order to maintain the safety of the students a lockdown was initiated until investigators could assess the legitimacy of the report of a firearm in the school,” said Kamloops RCMP Supt. Jeff Pelley in a statement.

“Once the initial assessment determined there was no longer an immediate threat, the lockdown was released.”

On Friday, police had said they had no credible evidence to suggest that there was a person with a gun at NorKam.

Pelley said the Kamloops RCMP detachment worked closely with the Kamloops-Thompson School District as they take all school threats seriously.

“Our General Investigative Support Team has been working on this file since the onset and through this investigation have been able to determine that this was not a credible threat to the school and a suspect has now been identified,” Pelley added.

It’s not clear if charges will be laid, or whether there will be any further consequences for the student in question.
