Kamloops to receive fly-over at Riverside Park Remembrance Day ceremony

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops’ annual Remembrance Day ceremony will take place down at the Riverside Park cenotaph.

Those wishing to attend the ceremony are advised to arrive in the park by 10:30 a.m., with activity beginning 15 minutes later. Kamloops will also be one of a select handful of communities in Canada to receive an official fly-over.

“The original commanding officer of 419 Squadron, Moose Fulton, was from Kamloops, so that is kind of the background for it,” said Kamloops Legion President Mike Young. “They have come down, 419 Squadron has come down every year with a couple of their jets and did a fly-past. Unfortunately, 419 Squadron was stood down, but I believe it was 410 Squadron this year that is doing the fly-past. They have taken up the mantle and they have continued that tradition for us.”

All of Canada’s World War I veterans have passed and Second World War veterans are becoming fewer and farther between. While many associated Remembrance Day to the World Wars, Young stated he’s been heartened by the next generation.

“It’s not just about the World War I. The World War II — it’s all about all the veterans and that seems to be what they focus on. And I love to see the fact that the students are carrying on Remembrance Day, carrying on remembrance. It’s really satisfying,” said Young.

CFJC TV will have full coverage from the cenotaph on Tuesday morning beginning at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will be broadcast on TV and available via streaming on our website.
