Kamloops man killed in rollover crash on Coquihalla north of Merritt

MERRITT — RCMP say a Kamloops man was killed in a two-vehicle rollover crash on the Coquihalla Highway north of Merritt early Monday (Nov. 10) morning.

Police say a Honda Accord was heading south on Highway 5 when it rear-ended a semi-truck in the slow lane. That caused the Honda to roll over before it came to a stop in the ditch.

The driver — and only occupant — of the Honda had to be extricated by Merritt Fire Rescue, and police say despite their best efforts, he was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation.

“This was a tragic incident and police send their condolences to the driver’s friends and family,” said BC RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brett Urano in a release.

“The southbound lanes on Highway 5 were closed for an extended period of time due to the incident but have since reopened. Merritt RCMP would like to thank all those who assisted at the scene, including witnesses and first responders.”
