KAMLOOPS — Water samples collected by Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) earlier this week show a promising development for residents in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) who depend on water from Kamloops Lake

According to CPKC’s environmental consultant, water quality results from the samples collected at the derailment site west of Cherry Creek on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday are all within BC Source Drinking Water Guidelines.

In an update Thursday (Nov. 6) night, the B.C. government says water sampling continued, targeting the communities of Frederick and Walhachin.

On Tuesday, the province noted fuel odor could be detected at Frederick, which is across from the derailment site along Kamloops Lake. Residents in Frederick have been told to stop drinking water from the lake.

The intake to the Tobiano water system – which is operated by Bluestem Utilities – has been shutdown as a precaution and the community will rely on its own reservoir. The intake to the Savona water system – which is operated by the TNRD – is still flowing.

Additionally, the province says containment booms remain along the shore at Kamloops Lake. It notes that no visible sheen was seen outside the boom containment area.

“Ongoing data collection from sampling events will continue to guide and inform future response actions,” the province says.

An estimated 80,000 litres of aviation fuel spilled into Kamloops Lake after a train derailment over the past weekend.

While rail operations resumed on Monday, work to clean up the 17 railcars that derailed is still ongoing. Four railcars were loaded with fuel, five contained gypsum and one was carrying pulp products. The others were empty, though CKPC said three of them had previously contained gasoline.

As of Wednesday night, the province says the three empty railcars containing residual gasoline remain at the incident site: one is on the slope, and two are in the water, secured to the land.

CPKC says there were no injuries reported, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
