CHERRY CREEK, B.C. — Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) is estimating that 80,700 litres of aviation fuel was spilled following Saturday’s (Nov. 1) train derailment near Cherry Creek, west of Kamloops.

In an Wednesday (Nov. 5) night update, the BC Government said preliminary estimates from CPKC suggest that nearly 68,000 litres of aviation fuel was released from the one remaining railcar that went off the tracks around 7:00 p.m. Saturday night.

This follows an earlier estimate that 12,700 litres of aviation fuel had been spilled from another railcar.

“The three empty railcars containing residual gasoline remain at the incident site,” the Ministry of Environment and Parks said, in a statement. ” One is on the slope and two are in the water, secured to the land.”

The Ministry also said CPKC has engaged a Shoreline Clean-up Assessment Technique (SCAT) professional, who is expected to be onsite today, Nov. 6. It had previously noted that additional containment booms had been set up on Kamloops Lake as increased wind meant some sheen was seen escaping through initial containment booms.

As well, the Ministry notes that preliminary surface water quality results from samples collected on Sunday and Monday have been forwarded to Interior Health for review.

“Ongoing data collection from sampling events will continue to guide and inform future response actions,” the Ministry statement added.

In an update Tuesday (Nov. 4) night, the Ministry said that additional sampling was conducted, including at the Tobiano water intake location. It also noted that the smell of fuel was detected at the community of Frederick located on the other shore of Kamloops Lake.

While rail operations resumed on Monday, work to cleanup the 17 railcars that derailed is still ongoing. Four railcars were loaded with fuel, five contained gypsum and one was carrying pulp products. The others were empty, though CKPC said three of them had previously contained gasoline.

CPKC says there were no injuries reported, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
