Interior Health warns Kamloops users of contaminated meth

KAMLOOPS — Interior Health is warning Kamloops residents about crystal meth sold on the street that contains a powerful opioid.

In an alert distributed Wednesday (Nov. 5), IH says the substance is sold as ‘side’, meth, crystal meth or methamphetamine.

Tests on the substance have found while it contains methamphetamine and caffeine, it also contains butonitazene — a substance considered more potent than morphine but not as potent as fentanyl. Butonitazene has been known to cause opioid overdoses and cannot be detected using fentanyl test strips.

IH notes smoking this substance is not safer than injecting it.
