More containment booms set up on Kamloops Lake to catch sheen surrounding train derailment site

CHERRY CREEK, BC — Cleanup is still happening after more than a dozen train cars came off the tracks while coming through Cherry Creek over the weekend and extra measures have been taken to prevent fuel or other substances from spilling into Kamloops Lake.

Seventeen cars from the CPKC train came away from the rails Saturday evening around 7:00 p.m.

The Ministry of Environment says more containment booms were set up on Kamloops Lake amid the ongoing clean up effort.

“Some sheen was observed escaping through the containment booms. Crews on scene reinforced the containment booms and deployed additional booms downstream to capture the migrating sheen,” states the ministry’s incident description from 9:00 p.m. Monday night (Nov. 3).

Work to pump out fuel from the derailed cars is set to begin Tuesday.

So far, there’s been no indication of damage to water quality or to the environment. However, results aren’t in yet from water samples that were taken Monday from nearby water intakes, along with the surface water sampling that was done on Sunday.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
