100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — A notable, lengthy prescribed burn mission will be taking place in the 100 Mile House wildfire zone over the next two months.

The BC Wildfire Service says it’s supporting the 100 Mile House Natural Resource District in carrying out five wildfire rehabilitation projects in areas from previous wildfires. The wildfire service says the burns may begin as early as Wednesday (Nov. 5) and continue until the end of December.

The burns include:

  • 100 piles northeast of the Pendleton Lakes
  • 85 piles near a wildfire in 2023
  • Two piles southeast of Green Lake
  • Two piles south of Canim Lake
  • One pile west of Flat Lake Park

In a news release issued Tuesday (Nov. 4), the wildfire service says crews will ignite piles using hand torches under favourable weather and site conditions, and crews will remain on-site each day to ensure the fires are controlled and extinguished.

The goals of the burns are to remove hazardous fuels from previous wildfire activity and support ongoing wildfire rehabilitation.

The wildfire service notes that smoke will be visible to surrounding communities during the burns.
