VANCOUVER — A monumental weekend for the TRU WolfPack men’s basketball team as they swept the UBC Thunderbirds for just the second time in program history.

It’s the first time in WolfPack history that the men’s basketball team is coming back to Kamloops with a pair of wins at UBC, as they knocked off the nationally ranked Thunderbirds 73-68 Saturday (Nov. 1) night.

Jayden Stephens led the way for TRU once again with 18 points and seven rebounds on the night. Dami Farinloye added 13 points while Jayden Green and Thomas Olsen finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.

The WolfPack, who outscored UBC in the final frame of Friday’s win, had more points in each of the first three quarters Saturday night. While they were heavily outscored (21-10) in the fourth quarter, they were able to hold on for a famous win.

Gus Goerzen, who led the 2-2 Thunderbirds with 15 points Saturday, hit a pair of three-pointers in the final minute to make it a three point game. Stephens, who also starred Friday night, knocked down a pair of clutch free-throws to put the game to bed.

The win takes the WolfPack to 3-0 this season, and they’re just one of three undefeated teams left in Canada West along with last season’s Canada West champion Calgary Dinos and U SPORTS National champion UVic Vikes.

Over in women’s basketball action, the WolfPack dropped a 57-32 decision to the Thunderbirds at the War Memorial Gym.

Kylee Koppes led the way for TRU with eight points and three steals. Olena Vasylenko, Allison Hansen and Micah Ramsay all added six points each, though Vasylenko also recorded five steals and three assists on the night.

The loss means the WolfPack women fall to 0-3 on the season while UBC, who are ranked fourth in the nation, improve to 4-0.

Up next for the WolfPack is a pair of road games against the MacEwan Griffins in Edmonton on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 7 and 8).
